About the designs
These 3 pages are some of the first designs I created for the ongoing Spread series I began in 2011. The basis of these designs came from text found on the catalog page, or sketch, that inspired each piece in this series. Every choice made to determine what the final painting looks like is dictated by the original sketch including color, size, text, and composition.
Over the last few years, the process of morphing type into an illegible pattern has become my ritual. While sketching these out, I find myself in a state very similar to when I'm zoning out - I guess really a form of meditation - while painting or coloring. After spending much time alone manipulating type, I've finally created something I can share with you, something I created for you to use when you want to zone out, and create your own pattern with color.

About the designs
Acts that arise from convention or habit, choreographed and repeated weekly, daily, hourly, all usually performed for something that holds great importance to the performer. Whether they're religious, spiritual, or secular, rituals fascinate me. Pattern making has become my ritual.
